Description
Spine Board (also commonly called a Spinal Board, Backboard, or Long Backboard) is a rigid, flat, and rectangular device used in emergency medical services (EMS) and rescue operations to immobilize and transfer patients who are suspected of having a spinal injury (particularly to the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine)
Features:
- Rigid, Flat Surface: Constructed from a single, solid piece of material, typically high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic or composite materials. This material is X-ray translucent and often MRI/CT scan compatible, allowing for imaging without removing the patient.
- Tapered Design: The board is usually slightly tapered at one end (the foot end) for easier and fitting into baskets or sleds, and often features a rounded top (head end).
- High Load Capacity: Designed to safely support a significant amount of weight to accommodate adult patients of various sizes.
- Integrated Immobilization Straps: Used in conjunction with a set of securing straps (often color-coded Velcro or snap-lock straps) that cross the patient’s chest, hips, and legs, anchoring them firmly to the board.
- Head Immobilization Compatibility: The board is used with a separate Head Immobilizer Device that secures the patient’s head to the board using blocks and straps, ensuring the head does not move laterally.
- Cleanability: The non-porous surface is easily cleaned, disinfected, and decontaminated, which is essential for medical equipment.
- Spinal Motion Restriction (SMR): Maintains the patient’s spine in a neutral alignment during transfer from the accident scene to the ambulance, and subsequently to the hospital bed or imaging equipment.
- Patient Transfer: Acts as a solid, unified platform for lifting and moving patients suspected of having trauma, particularly those who are unconscious or unable to cooperate.
- Water Rescue: Allows for stabilization and floatation of trauma victims found in water.
- Universal Tool: Serves as a fundamental, versatile stabilization tool for fire, police, and EMS agencies worldwide.
